Went to an audition the day before yesterday.

Heh. So, okay, I sing, all right? Modesty aside, I can sing well enough to NOT get pelted at by rotten tomatoes. I just like singing - it's as much my thing as writing is. I actually went to a Miss Saigon audition when it came here to Manila. My buddy Mitch and I practiced for a week, doing "Movie in My Mind" - only to find out that it was the song everyone else was singing. Eurgh. I should've gone with my gut instinct and picked something out of Les Mis instead.

*snicker* I know, I know. Oi, it's not as if we expected to get a lead role or something, you know? The two of us figured that the most we could reasonably hope for was getting a role in the chorus. Hell, being in the chorus of a major Broadway musical is a big thing already. And boy, it would have been fun.

The audition part of it was fun and nervewracking anyways. What can I say? Some people get off on extreme sports. I get my adrenaline fix on singing auditions. And singing is pretty much something I love doing, in front of an audience or no.

I have the good fortune to be working in a theater here in my little corner of the woods. It's our national cultural institution as well. Since it's celebrating its 34th Anniversary next month, they're having this little show and opened auditions to all the employees.

I'm a nut - so I went for it. Ended up singing, of all the bloody things, Mandy Moore. "Only Hope," natch.

Dear gods above.

I really wanted to sing "Someone To Watch Over Me" - Rosemary Clooney old-style - as it's my current running soundtrack every DAMN time I re-read [livejournal.com profile] lamardeuse's A Taste of Liberty and [livejournal.com profile] hp_femme's Parsley story. Something about the song reminds me of the Snarry and as I'm currently quite fond of the Snarry....well, I wanted to sing it.

Strangely enough, I couldn't find a single multiplex/minus-one tape on the friggin' song. And there are tons of casettes (CDs here are INCREDIBLY EXPENSIVE) on the newest fad pop songs. Britney Spears, gods preserve us all. Not one bloody decent minus one rendition of "Someone to Watch Over to Me" - it's a standard tune, for heaven's sake - I think the aspiring amateur contestant would go better to sing that than croon "Boys" a la Britney.

An aside:
My country is funny - okay? Give a Filipino a mike and a videoke / karaoke machine and they, I kid you not, will do their interpretations of their fave singer. Whether they can hit the notes right or not. Funnily enough, many Filipinos can sing fairly well - you should see the number of hopefuls on our noontime shows who participate in amateur singing contests.

Anyways, so I do the audition and mentally pretended I was singing "Someone" while crooning "Only Hope." The judges were highly amused. On a good day I sound like a Princess from a Disney cartoon - I do a good impression of Ariel, which makes my younger cousins laugh. I also do a good Chipmunk impression, which makes my toddler and infant cousins go crazy. Hey, they're my best audience.

Then, they made us dance. Uh-oh. Sing - yes. Sing damn well - of course. Dance? Two left feet, people. I can NOT dance. Hopelessly uncoordinated. The annoying part is, they didn't specify a singin' and dancin' gig. There were parts for singers AND dancers. Separate. Not together.

Eek! But I managed, left feet and all. Oh well.

Now I've just been handed a second audition piece. It's a selection from a Pinoy musical - it's wildly melodramatic, meant to be historical and Filipino heritage-affirming. *snicker* Also requires me to "mature" my voice to 50 years ago.

Well. We shall give it a go. At least this requires acting and just moving around, which I can do. Reasonably well. The trouble is, I'm partnered with my officemate, The Dork From Hell. Crap. This requires Oscar-winning acting skills.

Hmmm. We shall see....

Don't shortchange yourself -- your voice KIX heavy-duty booty! :) And you forgot to mention how the Sinatra song "My Way" has already claimed many lives because opinions abound on its interpretation :-p

Good luck on the auditions and say hello to Mitch for me (if she's the same one I know!)

Thanks. Oh yeah - "My Way" has caused many a drunken bar brawl in the country. We shouldn't blame "Frankie" though. Heh.

And yep, you're right, I am talking about Mitchiko. Should look her up again one of these days and see how she's doing.
