Please. Blame this one on my buddy Ara Kane. :p
I was hanging out on our High School ML and made this shot in the dark: “any good Harry Potter/Lord of the Rings crossovers out there?”
Frankly speaking, because of Orlando Bloom (much as I love him), decent LOTR fan fics are now few and far between. You have to wade through tons of mindless Legolas-worship, utterly bad, godawful slash, Mary Sues, Fellowships of Ten or more and other junk.
As for Harry Potter - multiply the LOTR fan fiction problem a hundred times over – the horrors! At that point, the only decent HP fics I had managed to scrounge up so far were Cassandra Claire’s Draco trilogy, Lori’s excellent Harry/Hermione future fics and my first foray into HP slash – Rhysenn’s classic Harry/Draco fic. I have to admit that at that point in time, any sort of HP slash squicked the hell out of me. Hell, I was even squicked at the amount of Snape/Hermione fics out there – though I was morbidly fascinated by one well-written SS/HG fic over at ff.net (I’ve clean forgotten the title by now…).
Anyways, Ara tells me to hike on over to Sugar Quill - http://www.sugarquill.net – where I found this truly lovely pair of tales by Murasaki99.
Clouds Over Snow and Stars In The River
Yes, it is a Harry Potter/Lord of the Rings crossover.
And gods, what a crossover! Murasaki deftly brings the two universes together by ushering in one of the Nazgul from Tolkien’s Middle-earth into the Potterverse.
Snape takes center stage in this fic (of course) and Murasaki does a FANTABULOUS job of capturing him, snark, crankiness and all. The fun part is, while Snape definitely is in the leading role, Murasaki lets Harry yield the spotlight to him with grace. She’s got Harry and the other kids spot on – and they’re more help than nuisance for our…er… Intrepid Slytherin Hero.
Of course, every hero needs a leading lady and the Elf/healer/Feanorian warrior Eregion fits the bill beautifully. Eregion’s the farthest thing from a Mary Sue as you can get – a wonderfully engaging original character. Of all the female OC’s I’ve seen paired with Snape so far, my hat goes off to Eregion. I just love her. The romance between her and Severus is both sweet and funny - unflappable Elven Calm seems to mix well with Snape Snarkiness. But Eregion’s not always completely cool – she’s got certain (heheh) Gryffindor tendencies, which bode ill for any Death Eater stupid enough to get in her way.
And speaking of original characters, Murasaki takes on the Nazgul and gives him her own spin in a move that’s both gutsy and brilliantly done. Tolkien’s Nazgul don’t have personalities of their own – the only distinct one is the Witch-King of Angmar. With Murasaki, we now have a name for another one of the Dreaded Nine – Gobardon Agnen, Numenorean king, finally freed from Sauron’s thrall.
There are plenty of ROFLMAO moments in both fics (especially the second one) – which beautifully rounds out the sword n’sorcery stuff AND the romantic goings-on. The second fic, Stars in the River, is currently a WIP but Murasaki updates fast (usually once a week) and it’s worth waiting for.
