Hit me with some LOTR recs

darth_stitchI'd just like to know, are there any unfinished tales/backstories written by Tolkien himself about Gondor's most dysfunctional family - Denethor, Boromir and Faramir?
Or if there aren't any, can anyone rec me some good fanfics about the three guys? No incest please (eeeeurgh, no, not my bag). I'm talking good, damn-close-to-canon stories. Or a damn good AU. Or even a kick-arse "what if it was Faramir who ended up going to Rivendell and joining the Fellowship?"
Even better, has anyone written stories about Denethor and "Thorongil" a.k.a. Aragorn? And I'm not talking slash either (er, no, slash is not my bag in LOTR). Aragorn, in disguise, once served as a captain under Denethor's father, Ecthelion. Unfortunately, Ecthelion played favorites, favoring Aragorn above Denethor and so did a lot of folk in Gondor. It's very much like the Boromir-Faramir situation, except that Denethor LOATHED Thorongil.
The thing was, Thorongil and Denethor usually agreed on policy and military tactics for Gondor and the only time they clashed was on the Gandalf issue. Thorongil trusted Gandalf; Denethor didn't. Plus, the truly annoying thing was that Thorongil didn't put on airs or grabbed the glory or whatnot. He was just a good guy doing a good job. And I think that must've pissed off Denethor even more. Add the fact that Denethor suspected Thorongil's real identity...and damn, there's a whole lot of fodder for a fic.
So is there anyone out there who wrote something along those lines? I'm sure that beneath the pile of mindless Legolas-worship (I love the elf but finding good fic about him is rare) and countless Mary Sues, there's gotta be some good fic about the Stewards and Thorongil somewhere....

There's a LOT of good quality LOTR fic here. There's an author named Dwimordene who wrote a lot of Faramir/Boromir/Denethor fics.
Celandine has a really nice Denethor/Fuindalas/Thorongil fic called Courting the Lady here as well.

Date: 2004-01-13 10:06 pm (UTC)There's gotta be some good Legolas fics out there. Have you tried Henneth-Annun's website? They actually jury the fics accepted there, so I have a hunch the fangirl stuff is a no-show.
As for a Mary Sue, how about my LJ icon? She's the spawn of a friend's musings on LOTR badfics -she's half ringwraith and half unicorn. What's really scary is I'm starting to like her and think of plot bunnies...

Date: 2004-01-13 10:32 pm (UTC)I hate to say this, but I finally and irrevocably fell in love with Faramir as I watched David Wenham portray him in ROTK. The look on his face when his father just flat out rejected him. AUGH. I wanted to adopt him then and there.
BTW, will you do that "Aragorn finds out about the other parent" fic you were telling me about? *evil grin* I want to see Nazgul sweatdropping. Mweehehehehehe!

Date: 2004-01-13 10:59 pm (UTC)I've also got a bit of story that explains something of the reason why Kou and Coros have an attachment, but that's not up on the web yet. If you want to see it, I'll try and put it up tomorrow. Kou also meets Faramir more than once... alas for her.
I've loved Faramir since the books - and the movie just helped me along in my adoration. :-) I know, when Denethor rejects him, I just wanted to dope!slap him a good one. Yes, I know he was mentally ill at the time, but still!
