You know the ironic thing?

I got really really hooked into this fandom when I first found the original Severitus fic. You know the one - the one with Snape as Harry's father.

Sure there was this great old Harry/Hermione fic that had Harry ending up as a this uber-agent Wizard OO7. And sure I enjoyed the one Harry/Draco fic which was my first introduction to the fandom's slash side - the famous one by Rhysenn. But by and large, I was put off by the SHEER volume of the dreck on ff.net and I didn't really get into this until I got bit by the love of Snape and was hooked by [livejournal.com profile] murasaki99's most EXCELLENT LOTR/HP crossover and the original Severitus story.

While I've moved on to the slash side of the Harry/Snape dynamic - I still find myself temporarily rearranging my world view to read stories of them functioning as a father and son. Personally, I think that their canon relationship might take that turn. But anyways...

Mine and Snape's Vocation by Gillian Middleton is a BEAUTIFUL take on the Snape-as-Harry's father scenario. In this story, Snape is James' cousin and because James is sterile, he is asked to be a "surrogate" in this complicated little spell that enables Lily to have a baby. Of course, we know what happens to James and Lily Potter and five years later, Snape is asked by Dumbledore to check in on his son's life at the Durseleys. Ye Olde Coote's machinations eventually bring reluctant father Snape and a needy little five year old Harry together because, naturally, Snape is not one to stand by and see the neglect heaped upon the child he never expected to take up as his son. This story and the subsequent sequels are an adorable mix of humor and drama as Snape figures out fatherhood, especially when it comes to raising The Boy Who Lived.

Now, I'm going to switch back my slash-dar on for Snarry. Mwee. Schizophrenic, much, ya?

Check out Blind as a Bat and Hounds of Winter by spinner. It's got vampires, a demented sense of humor and a Giant Purple Sex Toy. BWAH. You NEED to read this for the Giant Purple Sex Toy. And for this scene, written in Snape's P.O.V. where Lupin is freaking out over him and Harry:

“It’s not inappropriate. The boy is starved for love and attention, and here you are, giving him undivided time and energy, caring for him, bathing him for Merlin’s sake! Of course he thinks you love him.”

“But I do love him,” I heard myself say. I clapped a hand over my mouth. Lupin bounced up onto his feet and grabbed my shoulders.

“His charisma spell has absolutely fried your brain, hasn’t it? Severus! Can you hear yourself?”

ROFLMAO!!!!!! Thank you for the best damn admission of love made by Snape that I've seen yet!

And oh yes, do check out [livejournal.com profile] ausmac's most excellent Snarry WIP Love God - where Snape takes on an extra job as a radio jock and is about to find out what fame is all about, Muggle-style! I like the direction this fic is going, adore its hilarious premise and look forward to the eventual Snarry!

Thank you for the recs! I can't believe this; I usually read only slashfic, but for some reason, I read that absolutely gorgeous Snape-as-Harry's-Da fic and NOT the slash...

to be fair, I did read the first of the two slash stories before, a while ago...

Thank you again.

It is ten kinds of adorable, isn't it? Hee. I once tried my hand at one of those Snape-as-Harry's-Da stories but it kind of fizzled out and so shall never see the light of day.

Plus, my slash Muses would kill me. EEEEEK!!!!!

Seriously, Snape's Vocation is one of the better examples of that kind of premise and oddly enough, it kind of reminds me of The Boys and their children, especially my little Arthur Muse. Nuts, isn't it?
