The Star Wars Rec:
I rather like reading Star Wars AUs...especially ones that have Darth Vader defecting over to the Rebels. They're improbable but fun. And after suffering through a ton of angsty Expanded Universe books (I have given up on them, honestly) - it's fun just to sit back, relax and let loose with a fan fic.
Kenya Starflight's Innocence, part I of her WIP "Reborn" trilogy's another good example of this kind of AU. Set just directly after Star Wars: A New Hope, Darth Vader who's just lost control of his TIE fighter when the first Death Star is destroyed, crashes on Yavin IV and is severly injured. He's rescued by Luke Skywalker, who's still, of course, unaware of Vader's real name and past. Everyone's favorite Sith lord wakes up completely wiped of his memories and gets a second chance to redeem himself.
Amnesiac!Vader here comes across as an older, more mature and slightly wiser Anakin Skywalker. He's also funny as all hell and his interactions with the main cast like Luke, Han and Chewie are great. And I LIKE Luke here - he's not the Jedi on Prozac I bewail seeing in EU and a lot of fanfics. Luke is an interesting (for once!) sweet "good guy" and I really look forward to seeing how he's going to work out the friendship's he's developed with his still unknown and unknowing father.
But the fun part's with the supporting cast - the entire Rogue Squadron have distinct and fun personalities of their own that I hope get taken even further. The first story's a good start - I look forward to seeing the rest soon.
Okay, I was inspired by all the wonderful Star Wars AUs. However, with The Report and the Snarry fics, I really won't be able to write this. I posted this already at ff.net boards in my Jedi Skysong alter ego but I thought I'd give it a go here:

A STAR WARS AU PLOT BUNNY
This is a spin on the "Darth Vader ends up joining the Rebellion" chestnut. Vader's already become disillusioned enough with the Empire, the Emperor and his own bad decisions. The shock of finding out about his son's existence and nearly killing him in ANH, cements the deal.
And then, he's been assigned to take command of the Empire's newest flagship - the SSD Executor. Vader handpicks the crew, the officers...all except for the annoying Admiral Ozzel.
Think Tom Clancy's "Hunt for October" but with a Star Wars twist. *grin* Bonus points for great characterizations of soon-to-be Admiral Piett and General Veers as not just the next bunch of fellows on Vader's choke list but as men who could be conceivably loyal to Vader and just as disillusioned with the Empire.
Bonus points also go to a well-handled Rebel Alliance cast - especially the major players - Luke, Leia, Han, Chewie, Mon Mothma etc.

Some time ago I fell in love with Kir Kanos, from the SW graphic novel Crimson Empire. He's an Imperial Guard, a very competent warrior, and about a messed-up a fellow as you'd expect, working for the Emperor. But... I guess I like 'em tall, dark, and broody. *grins*
