Forget the greasy/non-greasy hair issue (naturally greasy, hygeine impairment etc.), if he's actually dog-ugly or it's just a matter of perception, whether or not it's acceptable to call him Sev (hell, yes, why not?) or Sevvie (FUCK, NO!!), who is his One True Love (er... no, I'm not going to debate that, for heaven's sake - I may not like your Snape ship but I'm not going to argue about it either, live and let live eh?), whether he is the Half Blood Prince (BWAHAHAHAHA) or whether he's got fangs or a background that includes fangs and bloodsucking (I will laugh my ass off if this becomes canon).

I think we can all agree on one thing: Snape has a very distinctive voice. And because of Alan Rickman!Snape (all hail!), we can all agree it's a lovely speaking voice.

But do you actually think Snape can sing? Really sing? As in knock your socks off because that's a freakin' beautiful singing voice that will melt us all into putty?

And for the music majors/experts - what do you suppose is his key? Tenor? Baritone? Or some operatic classification that I must check Opera for Dummies for like a dramatic tenor etc.?

Lastly, do you think Snape has the chutzpah to sing in public? Or is he the sort of fellow who'll reserve it only for the people of his intimate acquaintance?

This musing is brought to you by a sudden influx of seeing waaaay too many Snape sings! fan fics. XP

I'd peg Snape as a decent baritone, or even a bass, who would only sing in the shower of alone, because to do otherwise would be undignified.

Well, as a singer myself, I can tell that Professor Snape is a very unique voice... A baritone, most assuredly, but he could probably hit some low registers. Since I am no longer one of his students, I hope that Professor Snape doesn't mind me saying that he has a VERY lovely voice. I can tell, whether he chooses to sing in front of his students or not ;)

((Personally, I don't think he'd do it in front of ANYONE. Nobody. If he sings at all. But then, my view of Snape isn't nearly as colorful as Flora's :P ))

I do not believe Snape can sing. Nope not at all. Have you ever seen the movie Paint Your Wagon with Clint Eastwood and good ol' what's his name the gong player? Ok, Clint can't sing. He speaks to music beautifully but he can't sing. That's how I see Snape.

Cus if he sings then he becomes Alan Rickman.

He sings in the film "Truly madly deeply" and he does the voice of a fish/shark/I'm not sure in "help, I'm a fish" where his character also sings. He sings "The sun aint gonna shine anymore" in the first one and a song called "intelligence" in the latter. Hope that helped a bit!

In my opinion, to sing really beautiful, it is necessary to have had some singing lessons (two years at least) and I can't imagine that he had the time or the peace of mind to take them while he was young. Maybe now, after Voldemort, he could take singing lessons. (I just can't imagine that. Snape - an artist? Hmmm.)

Is there a musician at Hogwarts? Since quite a while I am dreaming of a subject that should (or might?) be taught in Hogwarts: The Art Of Arts. :) There you can learn all about magical arts - singing, playing magical harp etc, drawing, painting (somewhere those artists who painted all those hogwarts painings had to learn their craft!), even writing (there are authors in the wizzarding world - do they learn their craft from the muggles?? Never!), dancing and acting.
But Jo never told about that and I am missing such a subject dearly. (Mybe they can choose it in the sixth grade? *hopes*)

Even then, to learn singing, you will need to have private lessons. Not even really good choir can teach you much and you can never teach it youself, because another one has to hear you and correct you. By yourself you never hear your fine mistakes.

Untrained voices may be nice, but that's not enough. An untrained ear might still enjoy it, but other artists or just people who often listen to music will hear immediatly, if you can sing or not.

From: [identity profile] darth-stitch.livejournal.com
I will have to respectfully disagree with you about the singing lessons. *grins*

There are singers out there who have beautiful voices and perfect pitch, without having had the benefit of a single singing lesson or the least idea of how to read a note. And there are also people out there who, untrained, aren't very good but improve dramatically with voice lessons.

I can tell you that voice lessons do indeed help to improve and strengthen a talent that is already there. This is from personal experience - I've been singing since childhood and I've always had a good sense of pitch. Getting voice lessons and exercises in choir later on helped me improve and strengthen my range, not to mention how to breathe properly.

I don't deny that if you're a singer and you do this as a profession, you do need a vocal coach and regular exercises. However, in the context of my original question - I don't think Snape "needs" voice lessons in order for us to consider him a "singer." He could be naturally talented or he could also have had lessons in childhood. Think Phantom of the Opera - prodigously talented, anyone?

Anyway, it's unlikely that Snape is going to sing in an opera or something so again - nix the lessons. But I can imagine him singing quietly to himself when he's working with potions or playing the piano. Something that he does in private without an audience.

To sing just for fun his voice will be enough, yes. To sing more public ... his voice would need a little training, I think, but I don't know, if I met people who sing really good without singing lessons.

But yes, even an untrained voice can do a lot. ... I always hear now whether a popsinger had voice-training or not. I prefer those with a little training; but opera-voices again are usually too much for my taste. :)

I'd say that those who do sing as a profession do have regular lessons, vocal exercises and coaching - it's your asset and one you need to care for properly. Any kind of professional singer would - regardless of whether you sing pop or opera.

I have performed in public and depending on the situation, I did ask my professional musician friends to coach me. Singing a typical pop song is easy - I just had to pick something in my range and sing it well. But when I had to sing in a musical play, I definitely had to ask my pianist friend to coach me so I could hit the higher notes without straining and work on my upper register. I sing either soprano two or alto in choir so my upper register's always needed a lot of work.

This discussion is beginning to feed my Snarry Phantom fusion muse.... EEP. XP

Do I think he *can* sing? Don't know. Do I think he *would* sing? Certainly not in public. Not dignified, y'know.

What sometimes annoys me is the assumption that Remus can sing. His speaking voice is described in canon as "hoarse" (probably from Moony howling every month), which means that at best he'd sound like Bonnie Tyler. Not very pleasant, and certainly not something he'd want to expose except in the shower....

I'd say baritone, but I honestly don't think Snape would be a singer even if he could. I could see him loving poetry and reciting it in his free time, to himself, alone in his room but not singing. He's far too self contained and not near whimsical enough to *want* to regardless of being in private or public, I think.

Here from the Daily_Snitch.

I always imagined him having a somewhat "Jeremy Irons -esque" sort of voice. This was well before the creation of the RickmanSnape.

I imagine him as a tenor (and I'm probably the only one who does), or maybe a baritone-martin (high baritone, nearly a tenor) with a vocal quality that's...appealing...but not a clear, professional quality. I think that he could sing. (He knows what pitch is and knows where to find it.) But he wouldn't sing in public. His singing voice is good in an amateur-with-a-natural-sense-of-pitch kind of way. But he's not going to be taking the lead role in any operas.

As for whether he sings in private...I can't imagine someone who never sings *ever*. (Not even in the shower, or when their favorite song is on the radio, or...never ever!) But this may be just because I come from a family where *everybody* sings sometimes (even if they can't) and all my friends' families have been much the same.

Here from d_s... Definitely a baritone, possibly with a good ear, but would never, EVER sing loud enough for anyone to hear him. He'd probably bristle if you caught him humming "Ode to Joy" while puttering around the lab. I'm seeing more of a musical sense born of "my father used to lock me in the closet with my viola da gamba until I'd perfected his latest composition, but I haven't touched it since I not-so-accidentally poisoned him when I was 14."
