Ickle!Tonks rec!
Aug. 23rd, 2003 12:35 pmFernWithy is a goddess.
Like I said before, I love her Star Wars stories. And lucky us, she's starting in on the Harry Potter fandom. Click on the lj-cut thingy to read and get to this fabulous Tonks story:
The Doll Army by FernWithy is a shortfic that comes across as sweet and chilling all at the same time. We encounter a 6-year-old Nymphadora Tonks ("Dora" to her Mum and Dad) and she is flat out adorable. Not sickeningly or simperingly innocent but just a very playful, happy kid who happens to be just a little more different than the rest of the young wizards and witches her age. Her "difference" invites the worst kinds of slurs and attention, especially set in a time with Voldemort on the rise and Death Eaters on the loose.
Fern gives us a spot-on MWP - Moony, Wormtail and Padfoot. It makes perfect sense for Sirius to love his disowned cousin Andromeda and completely adore his little cousin "Dora." Remus is pretty much the Remus Harry will eventually meet, just a little sad and it would make sense that he would completely steal Ickle!Tonks' heart in just a few minutes.
But Peter? One sentence in the story says it all: "Wormtail says no." You need to read the whole story to understand why that simple line sent chills down my spine.
And that's the essence of Fern's tale. There's humor and sweetness and laughter and funny moments but at the same time there are these little details, things that Tonks is seeing but not quite understanding, the all-too-real and all-too-frightening circumstances of the War and Pettigrew's hidden life that we can see.
Run and read now!
