My brother The Eggling (who bears a disturbing, DISTURBING resemblance to Keanu Reeves in Matrix mode - I kid you not) told me this ADORABLE prom story.
It was prom night. You know - one of those special nights in a young teenage girl's life. You pick out the gown, Mom lends you her diamond earrings and necklace, you get your make-up done and your hair up and for one night - you're a Princess.
And of course, you have one of the cutest boys in class as your date. You expect to dance together, enjoy each other's company and maybe, just maybe, if Nanny and the driver aren't looking too closely, you could at least get a sweet kiss goodnight.
Unless, of course, the asshole stands you up.
Which is what happened to one young lady on the night of her Junior-Senior prom.
This poor girl sat on the sofa in the lobby of one of Manila's posh hotels, crying her eyes out. Prom's already started. There's dancing going. And her date has not shown up. It's absolutely humiliating.
And then, someone taps her on the shoulder.
It's this very, very cute foreign guy - American, probably. A smile that could light up the room. And he asks her, very kindly: "Hey, what's wrong?"
In between hiccups and sniffling into her handkerchief, she blurts out her tale of woe.
So Our Cute American Guy With The Gorgeous Smile asks her nicely if she would have him as her prom date. He introduces himself. He's an actor, new in showbusiness actually and is shooting a film here in the Philippines. He's not very well known yet but with that smile - he's definitely heartthrob material. As he doesn't come off as some kind of weirdo or perv and he's shown himself to be a very nice guy, our Heroine accepts.
She is the envy of her classmates. Cute American Guy is the perfect Prom Date. He dances with her, he makes her laugh, he's a perfect gentleman - in short, it was a night to remember.
Three hours later, the Moronic Late Prom Date shows up and of course, Our Heroine brushes him off with "I already got a date." Jerk.
So much for the Moron.
Anyway, Our Heroine and her Cute American Date with the Gorgeous Smile gets their pictures taken and now she has some very nice memories of her prom night.
Especially since some time later, her Cute American Date becomes very very famous. He's now a hot Hollywood actor.
Who was The Cute American Date with the Gorgeous Smile? Tom Cruise.
I kid you not. Tom Cruise - the Top Gun himself - the Last Samurai - THAT Tom Cruise. Way before he ever became a Hollywood Superstar, he was someone's Prince Charming on Prom Night.
I have no idea if this story is true. Maybe it's just an urban fairytale. But hey - tale or not, it appeals to the romantic in me and probably all the rest of us who had bad prom memories of getting stood up or just plain never got to go.
